House Cleaning and Saving the Environment

Every one of us has our own way of keeping our environment safe and healthy for our children and generations to come. Most of us are concerned about how our household cleaners can influence the environment and also how toxic they might be in our own home and to the people inside the house. With some careful thought, planning and effort your house can be clean safely and effectively, without harming the environment, home, people and pets with toxic chemicals and fumes.

Disinfecting your house or the entire surface in your house on a regular basis in order to prevent illness and spread of virus is not necessarily a good habit to get into. Not all area in your house should be disinfected regularly, including your bathroom. Using mild detergents with hot water and elbow grease can sometimes be helpful in keeping your bathroom clean, and harsh cleaners are not always the solution. While the kitchen on the other hand, must be scrubbed down and disinfected after every food preparation and cooking. Kitchen utensils, cleaning towels and sponges must be cleaned thoroughly as well.

When purchasing cleaning products, you should pay special attention to hazards and dangers on the label, this indicates how the product is harmful. Products with the word caution or warning on its label can be moderately hazardous and should be handled with care when being used. Always take time to read the instructions and labels of the products and understand what these products contain. Never mix products containing chlorine with ammonia as it will be poisonous when inhaled.

Use products available around your house. Vinegar can be used in cleaning mirrors and glass windows, Baking soda can be used for disinfecting and eliminating bad odors and as a mild detergent. These products can help save our environment and at the same time save money. Recycled materials used in cleaning are also an environment friendly solution, like using old newspapers for cleaning the window and used cans as replacement for trash cans.

If you have any questions on how to dispose of toxic house cleaning chemicals, contact the local health department or sanitation office for advice. Most towns provide a hazardous waste collection site where residents can properly dispose of household chemicals. Having separate garbage cans for trash that can be recycled and for that which cannot is also helpful for saving our environment.

Our environment is as important as our lives, saving it by avoiding the use of harmful cleansers in our house is like saving our lives as well. It is not a bad habit to clean your house all the time, but using cleansers that are hazardous to the health of everyone may also be hazardous to our environment.
